What is equality of opportunity? First, we could inquire about equality of opportunity. If so, we want the idea in its simplest form. We are asking what features a statement must have to be considered an equal opportunity statement.

Second, we might be asking for the wrong definition of equality. A conception is a particular interpretation of a notion or idea. It is a way of understanding what equality.

Formal Equality of Opportunity is arguably the easiest to achieve. It focuses on the formal rules that prevent certain goals, like employment and school admission. Formal equality of opportunity can have many or few goals.

The focus on formal discriminatory rules as an impediment to some role unites these views. Job advertisements must not specify racial, religious, or gender characteristics.

They must be so broad that anyone can use them without breaking the formal rule. This vision of frees well as equal society can be achieved simply by generalising formal rules.

So long as no formal rules prevent some individuals from achieving a goal. They have equal opportunity. It is thus compatible with private discrimination, implicit bias, and unequal resource distribution.

Conversely, Equality of Opportunity for Welfare is perhaps the most demanding conception. It focuses on welfare, not minimal welfare but equal welfare.

Only individual choice matters. To achieve equal welfare, an individual’s only obstacle should be their own voluntary choices. In other words, no one should be worse off than others by accident or choice.

If someone chooses to take risks or gamble, the resulting inequality is not a problem.

But if someone is unfortunate enough to be the victim of a natural disaster or a disability, the resulting inequality must be addressed.

A radical redistribution of wealth to those who are less naturally talented. Or who are otherwise disadvantage. For example, due to upbringing, natural bad luck or social, racial or religious discrimination, would require.

For example, investing in schools, sports facilities, and social networks may help reduce inequalities.

Educating With The Ideas

This project focuses on applying Equality of Opportunity concepts to education. We may say that educational institutions will have a central role to play in better realising equality of opportunity.

Regardless of the policies and reforms that are favoured. Because education is important for many goals. Including employment, health, wealth, welfare, and citizenship.

Arguing about equality of opportunity is really an argument. It is about how best to understand a society where everyone is free and equal.

However, equality of opportunity provides important guidance and a point of critique. For contemporary societies, politicians, and our own personal conduct.

It allows us to assess progress or regress. Educational institutions, in particular, are well place to effect change. And their failure to do so would consider a miss opportunity.
