MS Early Symptoms

  • Vision issues
  • Tingling & numbing
  • Discomforts
  • Sluggishness
  • Dizziness or unsteadiness
  • Incontinence
  • Sex disorder
  • Psychiatric

Clinically isolated syndrome (CIS) is a group of neurologic symptoms that last at least 24 hours and are unrelated to any other cause.

It includes demyelination, or damage to myelin, the protective coating that protects nerve cells in the CNS. While CIS does not always lead to MS, it is a warning sign. Symptoms of CIS include:

Optic Neuritis

Optic nerve myelin damage can cause vision issues and eye pain.

Lhermitte’s Mark

A demyelinating lesion on the spinal cord causes tingling or shock sensations down the back and neck, especially when the neck is bent.

Myelitis

Transverse myelitis affects the spinal cord, causing muscle weakness, numbness, and other symptoms.

An MRI can help determine if there has been only one episode of CIS or multiple episodes, which may indicate MS.

MS Secondary Symptoms

The main MS symptom driver does not cause secondary symptoms (demyelination). They’re actually side effects of the body reacting to it. Symptoms include muscle weakness, increased stress, and emotional issues.

By addressing the primary symptoms of MS, your doctor can help you relieve symptoms and prevent new ones.

MS In Women

MS is more usual in women than men. The reasons for this are unknown, but likely include genetic and environmental factors.

Those considering pregnancy with MS should discuss all treatment and symptom management options with their doctors.

MS In Men

MS is diagnosed 3 times less often in men than in women. The gap has wide in the last 30 years. This may be due to factors such as healthcare access, pregnancy, and lifestyle. Vitamin D deficiency is also being investigated.
